SunGard SCT

Hardware Requirements

Please note:
The actual sizes of the drives and recommended CPU's depend on the amount of data and users and the systems and/or modules that are being licensed. If there is a possibility that the Institution may scale out of a dual CPU database server because of storage or performance issues, then SunGard SCT recommends an 'enterprise' type server that can handle more CPU's. All RAID subsystems listed below should use one or more dedicated hardware controllers, not the built in operating system functionality.

Database Servers (Independent Servers)

  PowerCAMPUS eEnterprise PowerFaids
Operating Systems
DBMS
Windows 2000 SP1 or greater
MS SQL Server 2000 SP3
(Requires Case Insensitive Sort Order)
Windows 2000 SP1 or greater
MS SQL Server 2000 SP3
(Binary Sort Order provides maximum performance. See notes below)
Windows 2000 SP1 or greater
MS SQL Server 2000SP3

-or-

Adaptive Server 7.0
CPU Dual XEON 2.0GHz, or greater Dual XEON 2.0 GHz, or greater 2.0 GHz XEON or greater
Memory 1 GB, Min, 2 GB Recommended 1 Gb, Min, 2 GB Recommended 128Mb, Min 256MB, Recommended

(One for OS & SQL and the other for Transaction Logs)
Five - 18GB (or Larger) Ultra SCSI 3 Fast-Wide drives for the Databases

10K (RPM) drives minimum, 15K (RPM) recommended

One Hot spare drive recommended
Two RAID1 subsystems
(One for OS & SQL and the other for Transaction Logs)
Five - 18GB (or Larger) Ultra SCSI 3 Fast-Wide drives for the Databases

10K (RPM) drives minimum, 15K (RPM) recommended

One Hot spare drive recommended
75Mb, Min, plus
15Mb per 1000 Students
Using Ultra SCSI 3 Fast-Wide drives

Drives should be 10K (RPM) drives minimum, 15K (RPM) recommended
Network Card 10/100 10/100 10/100
Tape Drive for Backup 40GB or larger 40GB or larger 8GB or larger

Independent Database Server Advantages:

Fault Tolerant. If one system is down for maintenance or updates, the other systems are not affected.

Performance. CPU or disk intensive processes may interfere with other system functions. Having separate installations would allow disk intensive processes to be run concurrently on multiple servers.

Installation specific. The operating system and SQL Server can be configured to provide maximum performance and flexibility if they are installed independently. PowerCAMPUS requires a 'case-insensitive' installation and MS Great Plains performs better with a Binary Sort order.

Scalable. Each system can be updated independently.

Independent Database Server Disadvantages:

Hardware Cost. Multiple servers need to be installed and supported.

Software Cost. Multiple operating system and SQL Server licenses need to be obtained.

Administration. More complex installation and support issues. Increased chance of hardware failure.

Consolidated Database Server (All databases on one Server)
  PowerCAMPUS
Operating Systems
DBMS
DBMS Windows 2000 SP1 or greater
MS SQL Server 2000 SP3
(Requires Case Insensitive Sort Order)
CPU Dual Pentium III XEON 2.6GHz, or greater Min

Quad Pentium III XEON 2.6GHz may be recommended for implementations with FTE > 5000

Memory 2GB, Min

3GB for implementations with FTE > 5000
Disk Controller(s) One 3 Channel RAID controller with Battery Backup (2 Internal & 1 External Channels) and one 2 Channel RAID controller (one internal and one external channel)
TOTAL 5 RAID channels. 3 Internal, two External

-or-

Three- 2 Channel RAID controllers with Battery Backup. Each should have one internal and one external channel.
Internal Disk Storage Three RAID1 subsystems
(One for OS & SQL (18 GB minimum) and the other two for Transaction Logs (18 GB minimum)) Each RAID1 subsystem should be on its own RAID controller channel.

10K (RPM) drives minimum, 15K (RPM) recommended

Note
: Many server environments support 3 internal RAID channels. For those that do not, one of the RAID1 Subsystems may be moved to an external array subsystem. If this happens, then one internal channel from a RAID controller would need to be switched to an external channel during the ordering process.

One Hot spare drive per channel in case of drive failure is recommended

External Disk Storage
(using an external drive array subsystem)
Two sets of Five - 18GB (or Larger) Ultra SCSI 3 (10 K RPM) Fast-Wide drives for the Databases. Each RAID 5 Set should be on its own RAID controller channel.

10K (RPM) drives minimum, 15K (RPM) recommended

One Hot spare drive per channel in case of drive failure (Total 12 drives)
Network Card 10/100 minimum
Tape Drive for Backup 40 GB or larger

Consolidated Database Server Advantages:

Software Cost. Decreased Operating System costs.

Decreased chance of hardware failure.

Administration. Easier installation and support.

Consolidated Database Server Disadvantages:

Hardware Cost. Higher initial server hardware costs.

Scalability. Less Scalable than independent servers.

Possible decreased performance for MS Great Plains due to SQL Server case insensitive sort order.

PowerFAIDS Batch Processing Client
CSS Software Services recommends (for PowerFAIDS) that you give special consideration to your "batch processing" needs (loading students, generating batches of letters, changing budgets, assigning documents, etc.) when you plan your hardware configuration. Two approaches to maximizing performance are: use a very powerful user workstation (more powerful than the minimum recommended workstation above) or a dedicated client PC configured as a typical client.
