Preliminary Session & Workshop Information
A Distributed Maintenance Approach to Banner Security
Gudrun Kokoszka, Utah State University
Session #W06-96
Of Interest to General/Special Interest; Technical
At Utah
State University, Banner security maintenance relies on a distributed maintenance
approach supported by a custom form called ZSASECR. The session will
present this custom form developed to reduce certain user maintenance tasks
required to be performed by a DBA at USU. The form allows designated
Banner security module administrators to assign and deassign Banner security
classes previously requested and created for their modules by the DBA. The
form can also be used to grant these Banner security administrators the ability
to reset a user's password, lock / unlock a Banner account or create a Banner
account.

thousands of telephone & address records in Banner, but are they current? Does
your staff spend countless hours entering address and telephone changes? Do
student web entries dump garbage into your database? Does complex address logic
result in inconsistent reports and processing? Come see our solution:
locally developed forms and processes that keep our data clean with minimal
effort and no Banner mods! Process electronic telephone & address
changes from student web, housing, the Post Office, and telephone append services
automatically. Maintain quality control with a fast but effective review

Building a Black Box with Database Packages
Linda` Norman, Western Washington University
Session #W06-165
Of Interest to General/Special Interest
Is your
institution in a constant battle for consistency? Does everyone have
a different definition of an enrolled student? Do different reports
produce different results, depending on who wrote
them and when? Do you find yourself re-coding the same logic over
and over again? Do you have to teach every new programmer how to look
up a current address? You don't have to be an auto mechanic to drive
a car. You shouldn't have to know every field and calculation in Banner
to do accurate reporting. Come see how we have worked to put commonly
used calculations,
indicators, and data lookups in database packages, creating a central
repository for all of our logic. Analyze it once; code it once; debug
it once; use it forever. If question arise, there's just one place
to look for the logic. If changes need to be made, there's just one
place to change it. Existing code automatically inherits the new logic. Feed
the required information into the magic black box and receive consistent
results without worrying about how they were generated. We will be
sharing all of our code.

Enhancing Banner Job Submission
Steve Weinberg, Western Washington University
Session #W06-157
Of Interest to General/Special Interest
We will
present a number of extensions to Job Submission. We have developed a simple
method of using Banner Job Submission to run multiple jobs in sequence. Any
job, either Banner baseline or locally developed can be set up to run this
way. Error checking and conditional execution of jobs in the sequence is included.
Along with sequential, conditional execution of Banner jobs, we include a scheduling
tool for sequenced jobs. The scheduling tool allows for one-time scheduling
of sequences, or recurring scheduling. In addition we include a job status
monitoring tool that, in real time, displays the status of any job run through
Job Submission. End users can check to see if their job has completed at any
time. The display also includes job information like the size, location and
printer destination of the output file. Lastly, we include a method for restricting
the number of concurrent jobs each user can submit. This allows us to limit
Job Submission use if we need to increase system resources available for interactive
users, such as during student registration. We have the software for each of
these tools available for distribution.

Servant Leadership - Part 1 & 2
Joe Belnap, Utah Valley State
Session #W06-167 & 168
Of Interest to General/Special Interest; Reporting
Today, organizations
are faced with the daunting task of producing more and more with ever decreasing
resources. In addition to the issue of employee retention, leaders must deal
with the reality of waning loyalty and the necessity of seeking commitment
over conformity. Motivation and commitment are important but not enough
to get us where we want to be. Highly committed and motivated incompetence
is still incompetence. The idea of a being simultaneously a leader and
a follower to the same individuals may seem to be a complete paradox, though
further examination identifies it as an innovative way to change, grow, and
improve. When you turn the pyramid upside down, who is at the top of the organization?
The customer-contact people. Who is really at the top of the organization?
The customers. This one change, although it seems minor, makes a major difference.
The difference is between who is responsible and who is responsive. With the
traditional pyramid, the boss is always responsible, and the staff are supposed
to be responsive to the boss. When you turn the pyramid upside down those
roles get reversed. Your people become responsible and the job of management
is to be responsive to their people. Remember, the word responsible
means 'able to respond.' This session will show you how.
