Morning Workshops


Building Web Applications with Orbit – Workshop Part 1

The workshop is divided into three parts.  Part 1 is an "Overview of Web Technologies" used to build
Oracle based web applications.  This will cover the architecture, presentation layer, and application
layer of several technologies, including JSP, Java Servlets, Java Applets, Cold Fusion, ASP (.Net),
PHP, Perl, PL/SQL, PSP, and Orbit.  Part 2 will cover "Web Strategies and Solutions" in building we
applications.  This is a technical discussion about the mechanics of building transactional applications
in thin client.  Topics will include required skills, application flow, layout styles, handling GUI objects,
transaction integrity, and security.  Part 3 will go into an in-depth discussion of the Orbit Web Application
Development Suite by Runner Technologies.

MS Access

Using Microsoft Access to query and/or report on Banner data.  Hands-on examples for
simple to more complex reports will be presented.  Quick methods for comparing data in
multiple instances, and using Banner data in other Microsoft Office applications.  Intended
audience is for all users – functional or technical.

SRMAN:  24/7 Availability & Recoverability or Oracle 10g

This session will start with the basics of planning for recovery followed by hands
on scenarios of: enabling archive log mode, configuring RMAN, scheduling backups, real
database restoration and recovery practice using RMAN.  Both RMAN through Enterprise
Manager and the command line will be covered.

SQL Basics

If you haven’t the faintest idea what SQL is, but have decided you need to find
out, this is the class for you!  This hands on workshop will include a brief background of
the SQL language as it relates to Banner reporting.  We will discuss basic SQL queries,
structure, and uses using a variety of tools.  Exercise will include creating, executing,
and saving SQL queries to gather data from baseline Banner objects such as views,
tables, functions, and procedures.

Afternoon Workshops

Advanced SQL Reporting

Tired of writing the same old select statements over and over? Need a fresh
new look on what can be done with Oracle SQL? This may be the workshop for you!  
We will begin with a look at several techniques that can be used to select massaged,
reportable data from Banner baseline tables. This will be done primarily with the use
of aggregate functions such as avg, count, min, max, and sum, as well as some
analytical functions like rank, row_num, and lead/lag.  If time allows, we will get into
Data Manipulation Language (DML), what it means, and how it can be used.  This will
include writing execute immediate, executing DML through select functions, and
other advanced SQL functionality.

Building Web Applications with Orbit – Workshop Part 2

Building Web Applications with Orbit is a full day workshop divided into two
parts.  Part 2 will cover "Web Strategies and Solutions" in building transactional web

styles, handling the various GUI objects, transaction integrity, and security.  This
session will also include hands-on lab exercises expanding on Part 1, as well as
building transactional pages.

Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g for Database, Application Server & Grid Control

This workshop is intended to be part hands-on and part demonstration
of the features and functionality of Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g for Oracle
Application Server and Database.  Topics will include navigation, performance
monitoring, job scheduling and monitoring, securing your EM with SSL and managing
multiple targets with grid control.

University of Portland’s Journey with Evisions’ Argos:  Hand’s on Practice with Ad Hoc Web-based Reporting

The University of Portland has been using the Evisions web-based reporting solution for over
a year now.  Our story will provide practical insight into our approaches and the many lessons
learned along the way.  This very hands-on 3-hour session will follow short narrative with
opportunities to see, learn and use techniques in a computer lab setting.  We’ll progress
through increasingly complex, creative and interesting examples that are in production and
making a difference on our campus.  These examples follow our own progression and will be
helpful in yours.  There will be breaks throughout, and we’ll have staff walking the lab to
offer one-on-one mentoring.
